The Magic of Subtitling on Viki — Join Our Community Today!
You are hooked on a drama. The new episodes can’t come fast enough. We know. It’s sooooo hard to wait for each new episode!
Then you get the automated notification from Rakuten Viki (yaaaass!) that the latest episode of your favorite on-air drama is now available. But wait, where are the subtitles?!
Without the subtitles, you’re not quite sure what your oppa is thinking as he relives his confession in that steamy shower.
But have no fear. We want to assure you that as soon as a new episode is uploaded on Viki, our amazing group of volunteers rally to create these subtitles (sometimes into more than 50 different languages!). But in order for this magic to happen, there is a series of steps that need to be followed. Most episodes from hit on-air shows are subtitled within 24 to 48 hours of being uploaded on Viki, so let’s dive deeper into what really goes on within those magical hours.
Most of this process is handled by volunteer Channel Managers and Channel Teams, many of whom are in school or work full-time but still manage to find the time to volunteer because they are as big of a drama fan as you are. They do this purely out of their passion for K-dramas, a desire to learn a new language, or because, really, they’re just awesome people who want to share their love of dramas with others. Without them, we don’t know where we’d be!
Some drama series or episodes, particularly those that are highly technical, such as medical, historical or legal dramas, could take longer to subtitle because they often are reviewed for accuracy by volunteers who are subject matter experts in those areas. Already aired television shows and movies also may take slightly longer than the more popular, on-air dramas.
Our volunteer subtitlers are vested in providing the highest quality subtitles and go the extra mile to ensure their accuracy.
